United Nations Command Honors French Veteran Laid to Rest in Korea

BUSAN, South Korea — French Korean War veteran Serge Archambeau was buried Oct. 31, 2026, at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, fulfilling his final wish to rest beside the comrades he left in Korea.

“Today in Busan, we honored Serge Archambeau, a French Korean War veteran whose final wish was to rest beside the comrades he left in Korea,” said Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea. “His burial at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery brings him home to the country he called his ‘special second homeland.'"

Archambeau died June 5 at age 96. He volunteered for the Korean War and served as a bazooka gunner with the 3rd Company of the French Battalion from October 1951 to September 1952.

He fought at T-Bone Hill and in the Iron Triangle and received the Cross for Military Valour with a bronze star.

The French Embassy hosted the burial at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery. Crew members of the French Navy frigate Vendémiaire attended the ceremony.

“France served with United Nations forces in Korea and continues to serve as a UNC member state,” Brunson said. “Today, the crew of the French frigate Vendémiaire joined in honoring Archambeau’s service and his enduring bond with Korea.”

Archambeau is the 39th U.N. veteran buried at the cemetery since 2015, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

The burial took place during the year marking 140 years of diplomatic relations between France and South Korea.

France’s contribution to the Korean War extended beyond the service of individual veterans such as Archambeau. More than 3,400 French troops served with U.N. forces during the conflict, and France’s continued participation as a United Nations Command member state reflects an enduring commitment to collective security and the defense of the Republic of Korea.
