Italy Protests Gaza Flotilla Detentions, Calls for Immediate Release

(MENAFN) The government of Italy has formally summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest the handling of activists involved in a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla and called for the immediate release of Italian nationals still in detention, according to reports from the Foreign Ministry.

According to the statement, Foreign Ministry Secretary General Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia met with Israeli Ambassador Jonathan Peled and delivered what was described as a “strong protest” on behalf of the Italian government.

During the meeting, Guariglia demanded the swift release and return of all Italian citizens who remain detained, reiterating comments attributed to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Officials said the Italian side described the incident as “unacceptable,” stressing that those involved were unarmed and had no intention of engaging in violence.

He also raised concerns over the implications of the incident occurring in international waters and expressed strong condemnation after images of the event were circulated.

According to reports, Italy said it reserves the option of pursuing further political steps, including action at the European level, depending on how the situation develops.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Tajani had already criticized the incident earlier in the day, as diplomatic pressure continued to build.
