French President Macron Lands in Mumbai to Begin Official India Visit
During his visit, Narendra Modi will host Macron for discussions on Tuesday aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and defense relations. The talks are expected to focus on “cementing India-France strategic partnership and further diversifying it into new and emerging areas,” reports state.
The two leaders will also discuss matters of “regional and global importance” and are scheduled to inaugurate the “India-France Year of Innovation,” according to statements from the Indian government.
Macron, who last visited India in 2024 as the chief guest for the country’s 75th Republic Day, will also travel to New Delhi later this week to take part in the AI Impact Summit 2026 hosted in India.
Diplomatic relations between India and France were established shortly after India’s independence in 1947. Bilateral trade reached $15 billion in 2024, reflecting deepening economic ties. Cooperation in defense has also expanded, with the Indian Defense Ministry recently approving the acquisition of additional Rafale jets from France.
India first inducted Dassault Aviation’s twin-engine multirole fighter aircraft into its Air Force in 2020. As part of the visit, defense chiefs from both countries are expected to meet in Bengaluru to hold their annual dialogue and potentially renew a 10-year defense agreement, which includes joint production of Hammer missiles.
