Bardella labels Louvre robbery as ‘humiliation’ for France
The theft occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, when a group of masked assailants reportedly used a truck equipped with a basket lift to access a window on the museum’s façade. According to officials, the intruders broke into the Apollon Gallery and fled on motorbikes within minutes. One artifact—believed to be the crown of Empress Eugenie—was found damaged and abandoned near the scene.
“The Louvre is a global symbol of our culture. This heist, which allowed thieves to steal the Crown Jewels of France, is an intolerable humiliation for our country,” Bardella wrote on X. “How far will the decay of the state go?” he added.
Fellow right-wing politician Marine Le Pen, who heads the National Rally’s parliamentary group in the French National Assembly, described the theft as another “ordeal” for France and a blow to the nation’s “soul.” She expressed solidarity with law enforcement, wishing them success in recovering the stolen treasures.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said earlier on Sunday that the robbery appeared to be a “very professional” operation, noting that the items taken possess “inestimable heritage value.”
Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed that no one was injured and that investigators are analyzing security footage, the tools used in the break-in, and interviewing museum employees.
The Apollon Gallery, where the heist took place, has displayed the remnants of France’s Crown Jewels since the late 19th century. Its collection includes historic pieces once belonging to Napoleon’s family and Empress Eugenie.
