Dutch Authorities Plans to Probe Child Safety on Roblox

(MENAFN) The Dutch government is launching an inquiry into the possible safety and security threats posed by the online gaming platform Roblox.

This decision follows earlier evaluations of social media networks like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, according to the Interior and Kingdom Relations Ministry, as reported by a national public broadcaster.

“Online learning, relaxation, and connecting are very valuable for children, but there is also a downside: bullying, shocking images, unwanted contact, and health problems due to too much screen time,” said outgoing State Secretary Eddie van Marum (BBB).

His remarks highlight the delicate balance between the benefits and dangers of children's digital engagement.

As part of the investigation, the ministry will apply a Children’s Rights Impact Assessment—an analytical framework used to determine how digital environments influence children's rights, development, and overall welfare.

Roblox has increasingly come under global observation. In the United States, both legal authorities and concerned parents have filed complaints, accusing the platform of insufficient safeguards to protect minors from threats such as online exploitation and sexual abuse.

Although Roblox has introduced several protective features, including facial recognition for age verification and more extensive parental control tools, experts argue that these solutions are frequently ineffective.

Children are often able to circumvent restrictions by submitting false birthdates or using someone else’s facial data.

A representative for Roblox stated that the platform maintains rigorous policies regarding user behavior and shared material.

“If we notice these rules being violated, we issue a warning, block an account, or shut it down completely,” the spokesperson emphasized, noting that users also have the ability to report inappropriate behavior directly through the service.
