French court refuses Le Pen’s appeal over execution of political bar

(MENAFN) France’s highest administrative tribunal on Wednesday dismissed an appeal from far-right politician Marine Le Pen, who sought to halt the immediate implementation of a five-year prohibition from holding political office following her corruption conviction.

The Council of State reviewed Le Pen’s challenge to a lower court decision that barred her from elected positions, as stated by reports. The court confirmed the ruling, ensuring that the ban takes effect without delay.

Earlier this year, in March, the Paris Criminal Court found Le Pen guilty of misappropriating European Union funds. She was sentenced to four years in prison—two suspended and two under electronic monitoring—and fined €100,000 ($116,491). The judgment also included a five-year restriction on her ability to run for office.

While Le Pen is not required to serve prison time, her legal team has filed an appeal against the conviction. She had also requested a temporary suspension of the political ban from the European Court of Human Rights, but her appeal was rejected on July 9.
