France Criticizes Threats Against IAEA Chief

(MENAFN) France on Monday vehemently criticized threats made against the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offering unwavering backing to the United Nations’ nuclear authority and its leadership.

In a formal declaration, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Paris “firmly condemns threats” directed at Rafael Grossi.

The statement also reaffirmed its “full support for the Agency and its Director General in the implementation of its mandate in an independent and impartial manner.”

The French government conveyed its grave concern about any actions that might weaken Iran’s collaboration with the UN’s nuclear inspection body.

According to the statement, “France expresses its great concern over any undermining of Iran's cooperation with the IAEA. It calls on the Iranian authorities to fully, immediately and unconditionally fulfill their international obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.”

Furthermore, the ministry emphasized that Iran bears a clear duty to guarantee the well-being of IAEA personnel operating within its territory.

“France recalls the responsibility of the Iranian government to ensure the safety and security of the Agency’s staff in Iran,” the statement noted.

Paris also restated its dedication to a “robust, lasting and verifiable negotiated solution” as the only viable means to address the serious anxieties posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

This French declaration came in the wake of contentious U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which prompted Tehran to block Rafael Grossi from entering the country.

In response, Iran’s parliament approved legislation to halt all cooperation with the UN’s nuclear agency, escalating tensions further.
